WHAT IS 1,2,3-TCP?

1,2,3-Trichloropropane (TCP) is a completely man-made chlorinated hydrocarbon with high chemical stability. Unlike other substances, TCP is not found in nature. Historically, it was used as an industrial solvent, a cleaning and degreasing agent, and was a common impurity resulting from the production of agricultural soil fumigants. Today, it is primarily used as a chemical intermediate to manufacture other synthetics.

The primary danger of 1,2,3-TCP is its high persistence and severe potential health risks. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), TCP is explicitly classified as “likely to be carcinogenic to humans.”

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) both recognize TCP as a potential or anticipated human carcinogen based on evidence showing it causes multiple tumors in animal studies.

HEALTH AND PROPERTY RISKS

In addition to cancer risks, medical and environmental reports indicate that:

  • Long-term exposure to TCP is associated with severe liver and kidney damage, as well as reduced body weight.
  • Short-term exposure to high levels can cause immediate irritation of the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract, along with central nervous system depression, affecting memory, concentration, and muscle coordination.

There are two massive concerns with 1,2,3-TCP. The first is the direct occupational health risk to industrial and agricultural workers who handle it. The second is the severe, long-term risk it poses to the general population when it leaches into community drinking water supplies.

If you or someone you love lived or worked near a site where 1,2,3-TCP was manufactured, used, or improperly disposed of, and went on to develop cancer, liver damage, or kidney damage, you may have the right to fight back and seek compensation for your losses. Stag Liuzza is an environmental law firm in Louisiana that can assist you if you think TCP contamination is the cause of your illness.

What is 1,2,3-TCP contamination litigation?

One

1,2,3-TCP is a toxic, highly stable chemical that easily leaches into groundwater and persists for incredibly long periods. Have you or a loved one been harmed by contaminated water or industrial exposure?

HOW 1,2,3-TCP GETS IN THE ENVIRONMENT

WHY THE RISK? – HOW 1,2,3-TCP ENTERS AND PERSISTS IN GROUNDWATER

When 1,2,3-TCP enters the environment, its physical properties make it an incredibly dangerous threat to local water systems. Because of its specific molecular structure, TCP does not easily bind to soil. Instead, when it is spilled, disposed of, or applied to land, it rapidly leaches straight through the ground and into the underlying groundwater aquifers.

Once it hits the water table, two hazardous factors come into play:

  1. It sinks to the bottom: In its pure form, TCP is heavier than water (a dense nonaqueous phase liquid). It sinks to the very bottom of groundwater aquifers, making it incredibly difficult to track, map, or clean up.
  2. It doesn’t break down: TCP has exceptionally low natural degradation rates. It is a highly persistent pollutant, meaning once it contaminates an underground water supply, it can remain there completely intact for decades.

While remediation technologies like granular activated carbon (GAC) or zero-valent zinc exist, filtering TCP out of public drinking water is highly expensive and complex due to its low absorption capacity. Shockingly, no federal Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) has been established for TCP in drinking water by the EPA, leaving it up to state guidelines and aggressive legal action to hold polluters accountable.

Reports indicate that industrial corridors and water systems right here in Louisiana are at a heightened risk for industrial chemical runoff. If you suspect your community’s water supply has been compromised by agricultural soil fumigants or hazardous industrial waste sites, you may be eligible to file a lawsuit. WHO IS AFFECTED? – PROTECTING WORKERS & COMMUNITIES

Industrial, manufacturing, and agricultural workers face the highest risk of historical or ongoing occupational exposure. Because TCP was heavily utilized as an industrial solvent, heavy-duty degreaser, and chemical intermediate, employees in chemical manufacturing plants, hazardous waste storage facilities, and industrial cleaning sectors may have suffered years of high-concentration exposure through vapor inhalation or direct skin contact.

If you have worked in these sectors, know your facility handled chlorinated hydrocarbons or soil fumigants, and have since developed cancer or chronic kidney/liver issues, you may have the right to seek damages. Stag Liuzza is a toxic exposure lawsuit attorney in Louisiana ready to help your family join the growing number of individuals holding negligent companies responsible.

WHO IS AFFECTED

Other Populations at Risk

  • Agricultural Communities: Because TCP was an impurity in widely used soil fumigants, rural farming communities may have decades of legacy groundwater contamination.
  • Residents Near Industrial Zones: If you live near hazardous waste sites or chemical plants where TCP was improperly stored or disposed of, your neighborhood’s private wells or municipal tap water may contain dangerous trace amounts of this carcinogen.

For those who have historical exposure to these stable, toxic chemicals, the damage to your health may already be done. Stag Liuzza specializes in complex environmental litigation.
