Formosa Plastics, a Taiwanese plastic company, is planning a new plastic manufacturing facility in St. James Parish. The economic benefits of the facility are expected to be large but there has been pushback from residents who see it as another large company entering their home polluting it. Due to Louisiana’s strong economic ties to Taiwan, arrangements like that with Formosa Plastics are common but for residents of Louisiana who have to live near such factories, it feels as if they are being sidelined in the discussion and that the economic benefits are valued more than their own health and safety. Residents are now fighting in court to stop the facility from being built but it is unclear if they will be successful.
