A new law signed into effect by Governor John Bel Edwards will allow self audits to be conducted by industrial facilities in certain situations. These audits will be done by the company that owns the facility and the records from them can be kept from the public for up to two years. The certain situations that apply are pollution incidents that normally would not be reported and the purpose of the law is to give the Department of Environmental Quality information regarding smaller contamination events that it normally would not be informed of. Despite this seemingly benevolent motivation, self audits have already been performed in these cases and the legislation only changes that companies can now hide this information from the public.
